Durga Puja Step 2: NYASA

  DURGA PUJA Step 2:  Nyasa

3.     NYASA (Identification):
Revd. Maharaj (Swami Dayatmanandaji)’s favorite Upanishadic quote regarding puja is: “Devo bhutwa devam yajet” i.e., become God to worship God. Hence, the next step after Shuddhi is Nyasa where the worshipper identifies his fingers, different parts of his body, nay the entire body (instrument of worship) to the deity to be worshipped. The steps are outlined below.

Blow the conch Shell. (optional) Conch Shell is usually blown at the beginning of or during any worship.

3.1.  Kara Nyasa: (Identification of your hands with your chosen deity’s hands)
For both hands;
-         touch at first the tips of thumb and forefinger (index) for the first two steps then
-         touch the thumb and middle finger,
-         touch the thumb and ring finger and
-         touch the thumb and little finger.
-         Finally, for the last mantram, clamp all fingers together, keep rolling the right palm around the left palm in a clockwise motion while uttering the mantram and then end with striking the right-hand fingers (clamed together) against the middle of the left palm which results in a clap like sound.
-         Imagine that these fingers and the hands belong to the deity who is worshipped.

3.2.  Anga Nyasa: (Identification of various parts of your body with your chosen deity’s body)
Gather all the fingers of your right hand and:
-         touch the heart while uttering the first mantram
-         touch the fore-top (first part) of the head while uttering the second mantram
-         touch the middle-top (little behind the center) of the head while uttering the third mantram
-         touch the two shoulders (left and then right) while uttering the fourth mantram
-         touch the two eyes and in between the 2 eyes while uttering the fifth mantram
-         Finally, for the last mantram, clamp all fingers together, keep rolling the right palm around the left palm in a clockwise motion while uttering the mantram and then end with striking the right-hand fingers (clamed together) against the middle of the left palm which results in a clap like sound.
-         Imagine that all these body parts belong to the deity who is worshipped.
